a couple weeks ago i posted about tents and here's our finished product! we created two different models - a larger more permanent one for our yard (courtesy of my father-in-law) that a few kids can fit in. and a smaller fold up version like the ones we saw here that could also be used indoors and are better for just one.
here's a quick run down of what we used...
to make the frame:
[4] 1x4s approx 80" long to make the two A frame sections
[2] 1x4s approx 56" to connect the two frames to each other at the bottom
[2] 2x2s approx 54 1/2" for center supports
[1] 2x2 approx 70" to fit in the top center point
and a piece of plywood in the center to help stabilize it and can be unscrewed
later in order to fold it down for storage
to make the cover:
[2] 2x2s cut to approx 60"
4 yards of sunbrella fabric approximately 54" wide
wrap each end of the fabric around the 2x2 and staple
this creates a scroll to put over the frame and then it can easily be removed and rolled up
*note - these were definitely a figure out as you go kind of project and there was a lot of trial and error involved before we got to the finished product.
also i would highly recommend drilling starter holes and then screwing everything together by hand because the drill will split the wood.
and if you use wood that's any thicker the tents become too heavy.
Small Tent [ 2 ]
about 3ft tall on center
to make the frame:
[4] 1x4s approx 50" to make the two A frame sections
[2] 1x4s approx 60" to connect the two frames to each other at the bottom
[1] 3/4" pvc pipe cut to approx 60" long
[2] 3/4" pvc end caps
to make the cover:
[1] twin size bed sheet no cuts required, it is the perfect size
we wrapped it around each bottom support and duct taped it, but you could also staple it.
i wanted to prevent holes so i could re-use the sheets.
and to give you an idea of scale, here's my three year old in the large one...
